Have you been thinking about applying for your builders licence but the process seems daunting and confusing? Before you get started on your application, here are 3 things you need to know about licensing.

1. The process and requirements vary from state to state

Each state and territory has a different set of requirements to become a licensed builder, and requirements can also differ depending on the licence class you are applying for. Although the process and requirements differ from state to state, there are several non-negotiables you will have to provide, such as:

• Qualifications

• Project Portfolio

• Declarations

There will also be technical requirements to meet, like holding an industry qualification, and some personal character checks.

2. Licensing is in place to protect you and your clients

Although it may seem like another layer of red tape to jump through, the building and construction industry is regulated to make sure you are legally protected. Being a licensed builder means you will be protected through insurance. If you do work as an unlicensed builder, you open yourself up to serious financial trouble if something goes wrong. Licensing also ensures your clients are protected and have confidence in your ability to complete a project and get paid.

3. Make sure you have referees and a list of projects

The lack of acceptable referees is the most common mistake which leads to licence application refusals. You will need to ensure your referee is across every detail you are listing. Most importantly, you need to make sure you have a referee to verify every project. If you don’t have a reference for a project, it can potentially count against your licence application.

You’ll also need to ensure the projects you list will meet the licensing bodies assessment criteria. The projects you list should cover new construction and/or structural alterations, additions, renovations.
